The giant electronic commerce company Amazon has acquired a US firm that makes smart doorbells. Ring produces doorbells that record live videos of customers doorsteps and then sends the content to their smart phones.
The doorbell firm could help Amazon improve their new service known as Amazon key. Amazon Key will let couriers open people’s front doors and put deliveries inside. The couriers will scan a package barcode and once the delivery has been verified online, a camera will start recording and the delivery person will be able to unlock the door with an application.
Amazon is reported to have paid more than $1bn to secure the deal! Amazon’s smart speaker Alexa already works brilliantly with the Ring doorbell so the acquisition makes perfect sense.
An Amazon spokesman said it bought Ring to help customers keep their homes “safe and secure.”
This isn’t the first time Amazon has partnered with Ring. In fact the online company’s venue capital arm invested in Ring last year through its Alexa fund, which invests in companies that help scale its Alexa technology.
