Data Privacy Day
Data Privacy Day | Silvertoad, Luton

We live in a world where our entire lives are shared across the internet, public and private alike. Though the technological boom has meant that we are interconnected in ways we have never been before, a big problem with rising tech freedom is the regulation behind it. Data Privacy Day is a reminder to us all about the risks we come across every day when sharing out details online.

The Council of Europe has been using this day to raise awareness about the rights to personal data protection and privacy rights for individuals and businesses. As a business, Silvertoad appreciates this information and it has educated us on data privacy and online safety.

At Silvertoad, we’re conscious of helping our clients stay safe online.

  • If you’re using an open network internet connection; we’d recommend using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to encrypt your data and connection.
  • Ensure your passwords are complex – you’d be surprised to know how many passwords include pet names, birthdays and sport teams. A strong password is long, difficult to guess, and contains a mixture of numbers, letters, cases and special characters. Where possible, always use 2 factor Authentication for added security.
  • Never save important logins in your browser – and ensure to log out, especially on public computers.
  • Be conscious of what you’re sharing online – don’t “check in” to places, this can let potential burglars know you’re away from home.
  • Update your privacy settings – this is particularly important with Facebook & Google
  • Know if the site you’re visiting is secure – the URL of secure sites starts with https:// and should have a padlock in the browser frame.

Back in May 2018, the General Data Protection Regulation came into effect, and it is still very relevant 2 years later – probably now more than ever. We’ve seen the reports of GDPR scandals, data leaks, and it’s shocking to know how many businesses are not compliant. All aspects of your business must be completely GDPR compliant – and this includes your website. All sites we build in-house are by default GDPR compliant. If you’re not a customer of ours yet, never fear! We can identify gaps in GDPR and more, when you undertake our Free Website Audit & Report service.
