But what is Pilates?
Pilates strengthens the body in a balanced way, with a prior focus on core strength to improve general fitness and wellbeing. Pilates exercises are commonly practiced with a mat or use of special equipment, such as the Reformer, the Cadillac or Wunda Chair. General equipment used in Pilates usually involves pulleys and springs or handles and straps, providing it’s user either resistance or support, depending on their needs.
Pilates was developed by a German man Joseph Pilates, who strongly believed mental and physical health were closely connected. His method was influenced by western forms of exercise, such as gymnastics, boxing and Greco-Roman wrestling.
What are the health benefits?
There is a large number of reports on the health benefits of pilates. But, few of these reports have been backed up by scientific evidence which really does inspire a need for more comprehensive research in this area. Practitioners say that regular practices can help improve posture, muscle tone, balance, mobility and bone joints as well as an effective stress and tension relief. Elite athletes frequently use these practices to complement their training by developing whole body strength flexibility and to help reduce the risk of injury.
What’s the difference between Pilates and Yoga?
While both methods are different, pilates and yoga both have an influence on developing strength, balance, flexibility, posture and positive breathing techniques. Both practices work on the connection between physical and mental health, although yoga focuses more towards relaxation and meditation. Pilates is performed with both apparatus and mats, whereas classic yoga does make use of any equipment. Pilates exercises are performed in a flow of movement without the fixed poses associated with yoga.
